A small pilot study involved adults aged 65 or over who were physically inactive and had mild depressive symptoms. Over three months, one group took 48 grams of blueberry powder a day and another took a placebo.

Only 18 people finished. Depressive symptoms fell more in the blueberry group, but the difference from placebo was not statistically significant.

The authors caution that this does not show blueberries relieve depression and that larger studies are needed.
