Research on altermagnetism, a newly identified form of magnetism, has won the Europhysics Prize. It shows properties between conventional magnets and antiferromagnets.

It is hoped to help build faster, lower-power electronics and memory in the future.

It remains largely at the laboratory stage; commercial use will take time.
